Stay-at-home job or what? (out of army - into college)?
Filed Under Other - Careers & Employment | 1 Comment
I’m getting out of the army in january and college starts in august.
I’m married and I have a house and I want to still help my husband with the bills. He’s deployed right now.
I want to stay home and work on my portfolio or at least get a job that won’t take up too much of my time and energy.
fill envelopes?
build things?
I want to focus on preparing for college. It’s been 5 years (I’ve been in the service) since my first year and I want to give myself a refresher course and some art classes.
Oh, by the way, I’m going to study fashion design (sophomore year) and they are making us take art our first year (new to me).
I’m a workhorse and I’m afraid of getting a job that will ask too much and I will have no time for me.
Any suggestions?
College folk with homes, what do you do?
oh…and no to sales. I like paperwork and working with my hands. I like customer service too. No sales. No commissions. No pressures.

I work nights in a convenience store, and the work consists of cashier and stocking responsibilities. Problem is, the stocking is really hard work, and in the summer, it’s exhausting because the cooler is almost empty when I get there.
I want to quit this job via the usual 2-week notification, but it’s very hard to look for another job on my days off because I sleep through them. I’ve been at this job for 6 years, and it’s all but impossible to have a normal sleep/waking schedule. The work itself tires me out so much that I just don’t have the energy to seek another job.
In this extreme case of wanting to quit and then look for a day job, should I do it, or should I take a vacation and look for another job until I’ve used up all the hours?
Thanks, and I’m sorry I couldn’t find a way to put that in fewer sentences.

UPDATE: Thanks for the help, I can live off of my saved paychecks for about two months. The main thing is that I’m an animator, not a cashier. I know how to make things move and emote. I’m throwing my life away at that job when I could be doing something else. I’m also a sound designer. Staying with this job for much longer would be aiming too low.
One other aspect of all of this is that there are temp agencies that are always hiring here in town. From experience, I know that they don’t care if you have a job when you apply with them; they’re reasonable, and I’ve always gotten work. I just don’t want to go from one rut to another.

I recently graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English; what kind of jobs should I look for?
Filed Under Other - Careers & Employment | 2 Comments
I am tentatively planning on attending graduate school in the fall of 2008, but I need a job to pay the bills until then and (hopefully) save up some money toward tuition. I’m not certified to teach, as my degree is a B.A. I am an extremely fast learner. I’m sitting at home doing nothing, and the inaction is killing me–I am looking for a job to which I can devote myself and all my energy.

Best job for the future?
Filed Under Other - Careers & Employment | 3 Comments
I am currently a senior in high school and heading into college in the fall. Like most other students, I can’t decide on a major. I really want to do what’s good and profitable for the future. The thing that comes to mind is a job in the alternative energy sector. Like a job for a wind, solar, or natural gas company. I think this is where the future is and would like to get into this field. What major do you recommend for this prospect and what specific career path would you recommend for me? I’m all open to ideas. Thanks.
